The Agent step is the newest way to build human-like AI Agents using Voiceflow. Rather than having to lay out an entire conversation in individual steps, the Agent step acts as the brain of your agent - it can have conversations with users, run functions, lookup data from the Knowledge Base, and more.

When should I use the Agent step?
The Agent step is ideal for conversational AI agents that need to take specific actions. For example, an AI agent that provides product recommendations from the Knowledge Base and can lookup the status of an order via a Function would be a good fit for the Agent step. In fact, all of this agent's functionality could be contained within a single Agent step!
If you want complete control over your agent - for example, defining every single message the agent says or requiring the user to go through all flows in a specific order - then you might want to build with other steps instead. You can learn about all the steps that Voiceflow offers in the Voiceflow Basics course.
If you're looking for a combination of the above, with the Agent step acting as your AI agent's brain and routing the user to other steps as necessary, this is also possible. Using the Paths feature, the Agent step can dynamically route the user to a certain part of a workflow. You'll learn how to add this functionality during this course.
